Students get a state-of-the-art overview of a special area in Natural Computing, especially in the area of membrane systems. The goal of the lecture is that students should get to know the most important theoretical results in this field, but also to give them an outlook to possible application fields as well as to future research topics.
P systems (membrane systems) are biologically motivated formal systems inspired by the biochemistry of cells and the compartimentalization of living cells by membranes. P systems are aiming to abstract computing ideas and models from the structure and functioning of living cells and the way cells are organized in tissues or higher order structures.
Based on state-of-the-art research papers as well as on the new Handbook of Membrane Computing (appeared 2010), as a special part of the exam the students will give a talk presenting specific results to the rest of the audience.
