Aim of course

The main aim is a (guided) comprehension of research topics and open problems in the area of Artificial Intelligence. Participants should demonstrate that they are able to conduct adequate literature research, compose a seminar essay that satisfies basic scientific standards in form and content. Moreover, they have to deliver a verbal presentation (seminar talk) fulfilling agreed upon criteria as to form, time constraints, and contents.

Subject of course

Analysis of important contributions to the debate on the possibility of artificial intelligence. To this aim classical texts in the foundational debate on the possibility of achieving artificial intelligence, but also contributions to topical areas of research in AI will be discussed. A typical example for the first mentioned type of paper is Alan Turing's "Computing Machinery and Intelligence". Possible topics for (changing) specialization are, e.g., computational linguistics, the interface between cognitive science and computer science, or methods of agent modeling.

  • 30 hours: presentation (icluding preparation, handout etc.)
  • 33 hours: reading of relevant scientific papers
