After successful completion of the course, students are able to

• interpret concepts of ER- and EER- models as well as the relational data model and apply them in order to express given facts;
• abstract relevant concepts from a situation described in natural language, model them in ER- and EER- diagrams and derive relational schemas from such models;
• devise relational schemas (including mechanisms for guaranteeing given integrity constraints on the data) and to implement them in SQL on a relational database management system (RDBMS);
• assess and improve the quality of a relational schema;
• manipulate and query data stored under a relational schema using SQL;
• comprehend and independently formulate database queries in SQL and relational algebra;
• evaluate properties of parallel transactions and identify problems caused by parallel processing of transactions;
• understand the basics of query optimization and execution and assess the efficiency of query execution plans;
• execute and understand the presented methods and concepts for recovery and concurrency control.

• This course will be held in presence.
• This course will be held both in English and in German: the lectures will be taught in German. The exercise and the exams will be available in both languages.
• In the exercise part of the course, the application of the presented methods, concepts, and algorithms are trained.
• Participation in the exercise session is mandatory and in person.
• The lectures will be taught in German, but we will provide all necessary learning materials in English as well. Thus, it is possible to complete the course without knowing German.
• On March 11 and 12, two online quizzes will be available in TUWEL, which are mandatory for this course and must be solved within one week.
• As long as the number of participants is too large for GM1 Audimax, we will provide a LectureTube livestream. There will be no recordings of the lecture.

 The introduction and first lecture will occur on March 11, 14:00, in GM1 Audimax.

The final evaluation is based on the performance in several quizzes offered during the semester and two written exams.

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, it is strongly recommended to take the courses EP1 and GDS before this course.
