Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • describe the basics and theories of pedagogy and didactics
  • describe the offers of computer science education in the Austrian educational system,
  • select a topic for a joint (group) presentation
  • plan the cooperation in a group for presentation
  • list the influencing factors and planning bases for a presentation or a course unit
  • apply these influencing factors,
  • plan a teaching unit using distance learning tools,
  • select suitable (especially electronic) media,
  • justify the expected learning outcomes of the presentation,
  • select suitable (especially electronic) media,
  • present the chosen topic as a group in a joint and interactive way,
  • evaluate the result of the presentation.

Subject of course

Basics of didactics and pedagogy, pedagogical theories, planning of presentations and teaching units, media for computer science teaching, practice with distance learning in the form of lectures.

Teaching methods

  • Exemplary extracts from the history and theory of pedagogy and didactics
  • Joint development of educational priorities for a fictitious target group
  • Application of pedagogical models in computer science education
  • Discussion of pedagogical case studies
  • Development of the group topics
  • Preparation of the presentations
  • Carrying out the presentations as group work

Mode of examination

Additional information

At the time of planning, it is still unclear which Covid rules will apply in detail. I will therefore handle the pre-meeting via Zoom - that is possible in any case.

If possible, I want to hold the theory part partly as a face-to-face event and partly in distance learning. In any case, the presentations should be held in presence.

The reservation of lecture halls is not easy in WS 2022 due to a number of necessary rules. Since I have my own seminar room in the 19th district near Linnéplatz, I can offer this room for the presence events. This makes the choice of dates much easier. I plan 3 face-to-face events and about 5 Zoom events, plus presentations in presence. Please consider attending face-to-face events in the 19th district by the preliminary meeting date.

Further details, especially about the event dates, but also about the schedule and registration - especially about group formation - at the preliminary meeting.

Last semester we agreed to always hold all theory events on the same day of the week. If this arrangement is also desired in the winter semester 2022/23, my suggestion is 8 dates, each on Thursday, 17:30 to 20:00. Other weekdays or times can be arranged at the preliminary meeting. Except for Tuesday, any working day is possible.

In the preliminary meeting, (further) focal points of the seminar can also be determined together. Possible focal points: "Python in the classroom", "Progressive Web Apps".

The documents for the LVA will be made available via TUWEL.

In the last semesters, the use of Telegram has also proven useful, especially for requests, discussions and information that needs to be made available quickly. => Registration link. Registrations are possible as of now. Please use a user ID that shows a connection to your name.

The documents for the LVA will be made available via TUWEL and the Telegram group.

Didactical and pedagogical basic knowledge is desired, but in any case interest in these topics. Historical and theoretical background will also be provided. The seminar is intended for anyone who wants or needs to present on topics in computer science, not just active or future teachers.

The presentations are held as attendance events (if not otherwise possible as distance learning events) on several (to be agreed) dates on consecutive days in blocks. Guideline for the duration of the presentation: 25 minutes per group member. Since the seminar is held in blocks, it can be completed as early as December 2022. Proposal: in the period 14 to 16 December

Effort estimate:
15 h Attendance at the presence and distance learning dates of the preparatory phase.
35 h preparation of the seminar paper
20 h presentation; attendance or participation in other presentations
5 h Follow-up (documentation)
------------------------------
75 h = 3 ECTS

Examination modalities

The seminar teaches basic concepts from the history and theory of pedagogy and didactics. The understanding of these terms has to be proven in a test or a short presentation. Furthermore, participation in the seminar requires the willingness to discuss methodical and didactical topics. In any case, the focus of the assessment is the practical part, i.e. the presentation of the chosen topic by the group. All other participants take on the role of the target group defined by the presentation group. The following points should be observed:

  • Description of the target group and the (fictitious) previous knowledge of the target group
  • Describe the expected learning outcomes after the presentation has been given
  • Creative selection of suitable media
  • Performing the presentation
  • Cooperation within the group
  • Success control after the presentation
  • Submission of a summary report
