  • describe the offers of computer science education in the Austrian educational system,

  • plan the cooperation in a group for presentation
  • list the influencing factors and planning bases for a presentation or a course unit

  • plan a teaching unit using distance learning tools,
  • select suitable (especially electronic) media,
  • justify the expected learning outcomes of the presentation,

  • present the chosen topic as a group in a joint and interactive way,

Basics of didactics and pedagogy, pedagogical theories, planning of presentations and teaching units, media for computer science teaching, practice with distance learning in the form of lectures.

The seminar consists of the preliminary discussion, the theoretical part and the practical part. Also planned for this semester:

Visit to the OCG Computer Science Day (24.10.) (optional)
Visit to the eEducation conference (7.11., as part of Interpaedagogica) (optional)
Visit to a TU Wien Informatics eduLAB workshop (date still open)

In order to avoid collisions with other courses as far as possible, the preliminary discussion will be held via Zoom.

The theory part will be held partly as a face-to-face event and partly as distance learning. The decision on this will be made in the preliminary meeting.

In any case, the presentations will be held in person.

As I have my own seminar room in the 19th district near Linnéplatz, I can offer this room for the face-to-face events. This makes it much easier to choose a date. Please consider whether you are happy to attend the face-to-face events in the 19th district by the date of the preliminary meeting.

Further details, especially on the dates of the events, but also on the procedure and registration - especially on group formation - will be provided at the preliminary meeting.

In the preliminary meeting, (further) focal points of the seminar can also be jointly determined. Possible focal points: "Smart Home", "AI in teaching".

The documents for the course will be made available via TUWEL and also distributed via the Telegram group.

Basic didactic and pedagogical knowledge is desirable, but at least an interest in these topics. Historical and theoretical background information will also be provided. The seminar is aimed at anyone who wants or needs to give presentations on computer science topics, not just current or future teachers.

The presentations are held as face-to-face events on several (to be agreed) dates on consecutive days. Guideline for the duration of the presentation: 25 minutes per group member. As the seminar is held in blocks, it can be completed as early as December 2024 or January 2025. Proposal: in the period from December 18 to 21, 2024 or January 8 to 11, 2025.

Examination modalities

The seminar teaches basic concepts from the history and theory of pedagogy and didactics. The understanding of these terms has to be proven in a test or a short presentation. Furthermore, participation in the seminar requires the willingness to discuss methodical and didactical topics. In any case, the focus of the assessment is the practical part, i.e. the presentation of the chosen topic by the group. All other participants take on the role of the target group defined by the presentation group. The following points should be observed:

  • Description of the target group and the (fictitious) previous knowledge of the target group
  • Describe the expected learning outcomes after the presentation has been given
  • Creative selection of suitable media
  • Performing the presentation
  • Cooperation within the group
  • Success control after the presentation
  • Submission of a summary report
