Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • Apply methods from the area of systematic literature reviews
  • Conceptualize and write a survey paper for a research topic in the field of distributed systems
  • Conceptualize and give a talk about a survey in the field of distributed systems

Subject of course

The goal of this seminar is to discuss and learn foundational techniques required in scientific work in the area of distributed systems with a focus on Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Fog and Edge Computing, Advanced Networking Technologies, Blockchains, Cyber-physical Systems, Machine Learning, and Big Data; in particular, literature search, presentation of scientific results, presentation techniques. Therefore, active participation is highly encouraged.

Students have to give their preference for the topics. After the students receive their final topics, they will have one discussion with the assigned supervisor. In the process, through the writing of a scientific paper, and the presentation of the outcome, they will acquire fundamental competencies in academic research.

IMPORTANT: 

This course has relatively rigid constraints regarding the number of participants due to the limited capacity of lecturers to propose topics.  However, within the first two/three weeks, there is usually the possibility of some spots becoming available. We recommend that all the students on the waiting list interested in participating in the seminar wait for open positions. Please, avoid sending emails asking us to enroll you in the course. If you're on the waiting list, it's because, currently, there are no free spots.

Presentations

Mo., 12.06.2023; Tue., 13.06.2023 -> The presentations are going to be offline. In case we verify that you can't attend for specific and justified reasons, we can switch it to online.

Teaching methods

Introduction into methods from the field of systematic literature reviews, conceptualization and realization of a survey paper, conceptualization and presentation of a talk.
