Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

- apply skills in user interface design and interaction design beyond the traditional Desktop.
- understand and apply principles in design and evaluation according to HCI fundamentals for future applications and interaction techniques
- critically reflect on the impact of new technological developments
- design and develop innovative interaction techniques
- prototype new kinds of interaction between humans and computers.

Subject of course

Beyond the Desktop investigates design alternatives to traditional graphical user interfaces. Through the advances of new technologies in our environment - made possible by inexpensive yet powerful hardware and its miniaturisation - and the progressing development of sensors and networking technologies, new forms of Human-Computer Interaction have become possible.
In this course the underlying "enabling technologies" and their field of application such as mobile, tangible and ubiquitous computing as well as brain-computer interfaces and ambient displays are explained.
These (from an HCI perspective) new areas of tension are critically investigated by means of case studies. Appropriate methods for designing suitable, innovative user interfaces as well as prototyping and evaluation are presented.

Teaching methods

The course consists of a lecture and a practical part. Subject matters presented in the lecture are to be directly applied in their respective assignments.
The lecture part ends with the elaboration of a single exercise. The exercise part consists of the elaboration and submission of three exercise examples, some of which are carried out in small groups.
