Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to unlock and structure the content of documents such that they are comprehensible to computer systems. This includes Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), Layout Analysis and Writer identification as well as preprocessing stepd in order to make the subsequent analysis possible. The lab exercise deepens the understanding of the algorithms used.

Handwriting Recognition, Layout Analysis, Text Detection, OCR, Document Segmentation and Binarization,  Graphics Recognition, Information extraction from document images, Document databases and digital libraries, Forensic document analysis

  • implementation of methods discussed in the lecture using textual instructions
  • carrying out experiments using the implemented methods
  • documentation including decription and interpretation of results
  • oral feedback during assignment interviews
