Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

- understand and apply different scientific paradigms and approaches
- plan, conceptualize and conduct study designs in empirical evaluation research
- successfully present research proposals
- apply selected qualitative and quantitative research methods
- research relevant scientific literature on a topic.

Subject of course

Introduction, basics and advanced aspects of empirical evaluation research methods in human-computer interaction. Participants will be enabled to plan empirical studies and to present the planned study in the form of a project proposal. Important topics covered in the course include the following:

  • Literature search: Knowledge of relevant digital libraries, planning and conducting searches in related literature to quickly comprehend the state-of-the-art within a chosen research area.
  • Study Design: Formulating a precise research question. Postulating hypotheses that can be subjected to empirical research. Variables and their role in study design. Knowledge of available research methods and choice thereof. Qualitative and quantitative approaches.
  • Scientific Writing and Presentation: Fundamentals of scientific writing, discussion of common errors, creation of scientific presentations.

Teaching methods

Blocked workshops. Incremental creation and elaboration of a project proposal consisting of problem definition, expected result, hypotheses, methodology, and bibliography. Iterative feedback by the lecturers as well as a peer review. Final presentation.
