Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the basic mechanisms of a data network, in particular, the Internet. Furthermore, selected data network applications are treated and discussed.

Subject of course

Goals and requirements for networks, management Models, OSI-7 layers, shared media, direct line; resources (reservation, usage, efficiency), timing (synchronous, asynchronous).

(L1) Physical channels: Cu, LWL, Radio, PoE

(L2) Switches: Functioning and internal structure, protocols, priority queuing, parameters, network topologies (Spanning Tree)

(L3) Router: IP, DNS, ARP, static/dynamic Routing; authentification, 802.1x; masquarading: NAT, PAT

(L4) Connection-oriented / Connection-less Protocols

Network management

Application examples: SNMP, Web, Mail, VoIP, BlueTooth, RFID / NFC, KNX

Teaching methods

Groups of 3 people are formed. Each group works on a sub-topic from the topic of data networks. This is to present and to prepare a written elaboration.

After each presentation, content and presentation style and manner will be discussed.

1. Presentation technique of the presentation
2. Lecture style of the presentation
3. Quality of the written elaboration
4. Result of the written (multiple-choice) final exam

Each of the parts must be positive for itself.
