Aim of course

By attending and completing this course you will acquire the following basic knowledge and skills in the field of computer networks:

  • Professional and methodical knowledge: How do computer networks work?  Which communication models, network architectures and protocols are there?  Which physical fundamentals, mechanisms and algorithms are used?  Which methods for performance analysis are there?  Which practical applications are there?
  • Skills: Assessment of achievable goals (such as performance), limitations and the undefined aspects of computer networks. Basic skills in network programming and network configuration.
  • Social skills and self-competences: Ability to cooperate, self-organization, presentation skills.

Subject of course

Basics: Goals, Requirements, Management Models, OSI-7 Layers, Shared Media, Direct Line; Resources (reservation, usage, efficiency), timing (synchronous, asynchronous).

(L1) Physical channels: Cu, LWL, Radio, PoE

(L2) Switches: Functioning and internal structure, protocols, priority queuing, parameters, network topologies (Spanning Tree)

(L3) Router: IP, DNS, ARP, static/dynamic Routing; authentification, 802.1x; masquarading: NAT, PAT

(L4) Connection-oriented / Connection-less Protocols
