After successful completion of the course, students are able to

• explain what computer science is about
• present structures and processes of a university
• apply learning methods and how to organize themselves to make progress while studying computer science or business informatics
• select and apply strategies, methods, and tools to deal with different forms of thinking and problem-solving
• search for knowledge
• deal with possibilities to decide for a study program
• orient regarding their own carriers and future job possibilities
• get to learn other students and exchange with them

This course provides an introduction to computer science as a field of study and as a field of work. The LVA should arouse interest in further studies and enable students to better classify the contents presented in further studies.

• Organisation ans structure of the TU Wien as well as of the Faculty of Informatics
• Bachelor and master studies at our faculty
• Research areas of computer science at our faculty and in general
• Scientific work
• Strategies for a successful study at our university (motivation, learning, learning strategies, self-management, crisis management)
• Responsibility and ethics, rules of action, code of conduct, diversity, freedom in research
• Job areas, career possibilities, challenges, and options

The following topics will be covered across the board: Computer Science as Science, Learning and Research at the TU Vienna, Computer Science and Society.

In winter term

• Input and lectures to the subjects of the course
• Participation in the Beginners' Trail
• Video interviews - a group work to get to know each other
• Treasure hunt - group task to get to know the faculty and its focal points
• Online Tests - for self-assessment

In summer term

• A blocked input session

Content is taught in lectures by different lecturers in the winter semester in the lecture room and in the summer semester in the form of recordings or slides in TUWEL. Assessment is based on online tests and successful completion of various tasks (see above for the differences between the winter and summer semesters). More detailed information is provided in the first lecture unit or in the TUWEL course.
