173.018 Organic analysis in objects of art

2021S, VO, 1.5h, 2.25EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 2.25
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Online

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to give information on the organic materials occuring in selected art objects and how to identify them with traditional chromatographic methods.

Subject of course

Topics are organic substance groups like animal and plant glues, ethereal oils and pigments often occuring in objects of art. On the basis of selected practical examples the possibility of identification of organic components either by specific micro-chemical test methods or simple analytical chromatographic techniques (CGC, Pyrolysis-CGC, HPLC, DC, DC-FID) will be also discussed.

Teaching methods

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), pyrolysis-GC/MS, microchemical methods
