Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply field-specific toxicological terminology, to analyse toxicological problems, to evaluate to a certain degree the hazards and risks associated with poisons, to communicate this knowledge to others, and to participate in well-founded discussions about these topics.

Subject of course

Introduction to toxicology. Description of the most important research methods and experimental models (human, animal, and in vitro studies). Qualitative and quantitative characterization of the effect of poisons (including dose-response relationship, NOAEL/LOAEL, extrapolation). Risk and hazard. Carcinogenesis and reproductive/developmental toxicology. Basics of toxikokinetics. Acute intoxication, its epidemiology, and the associated treatment options.
