Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

- understand the conceptual aspects of process intensification with respect to principles, scales and application domains.

- apply the fundamentals and methods of process intensification for the development of less costly, more practical and sustainable processes.

Subject of course

Definition of process intensification  (principles and application domains) regarding:

- molecules and reactions

- driving forces, interfaces and separations

- synergies at process and plant level

Advanced topics with respect to:

- Structure (spatial domain, e.g., catalysts, materials for heat and mass transport)

- Energy (thermodynamic domain, e.g., energy dependent separation processes)

- Time (temporal domain, e.g., periodic operation of reactors and columns)

- Synergy (functional domain, e.g., integrated processes and operations such as reactive and extractive distillations, heat pumping in distilaltions)

Process intensification, safety and sustainability

Presentation of cases from academic and industrial projects

Teaching methods

The contents are taught through lectures, calculation examples, analysis of plants and processing of various tasks and questions.
