Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

- understand the conceptional and computational aspects of the systematic methods in process design.

- apply heuristics together with graphical and analytical methods to develop optimal designs.

- systematically deal with process systems of diverse scale and complexity (unit operations, production lines and plants, industrial clusters etc.).

Subject of course

  • Process Synthesis and Analysis: Formulation of the design problem and its hierarchival structure, continuous vs. batch operation, retrofit- vs grassrootdesign, the role of modelling, sumulation and flowsheeting, decomposition/aggregation of process systems and their modelling, examples of "unit operation" models (e.g., flash, distillation, reactors,...)
  • Process Assessment: Sizing and cost analysis, environmental aspects (e.g., LCA, SHE hazard- and risk-analysis), flexibility analysis
  • Process Integration: Heat-, Heant and Power-, Mass-integration and design of the correspnding networks (HEN and MEN design)
  • Reactor networks: Introduction in graphical methods
  • Distillation ”Sequencing”  and Integration
  • Batch Processes: Examples of batch operation for "unti operations" (e.g., reactors, distillation, crystallisation, filtrationBeispiele von Batchbetrieb für Reaktoren, Destillation, Kristallisation, Filtration, „Multiproduct and Multipurpose“ plants, and „Scheduling“ concepts
