Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • derive the essential technical terms in environmental microbiology.
  • describe the basic diversity and forms of microorganisms (incl. viruses) and their importance for the environment.
  • formulate important microbiologically based material flows in the environment.
  • analyze and discuss microbiological basics of biotechnological and environmental biotechnological processes by using basic technical terms.
  • name and discuss important types of microbiological hazards to the human health in the environment.

Course content:

  • History, importance and concepts of environmental microbiology.
  • Basic methods of analysis and investigation in environmental microbiology.
  • Diversity of algae, protozoa, fungi, bacteria, archaea, viruses.
  • Health aspects of microorganisms in the environment.
  • Nutrient cycling and microbial loop.
  • Degradation, transformation and co-metabolism.
  • Examples of important applications in environmental biotechnological processes.
