Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand current topics in the field of white biotechnology (industrial biotechnology) with special emphasis on biorefineries. They can describe and discuss essential research approaches and current research results in the field of biorefineries.

Subject of course

Definition, classification and structure of biorefineries. Biotechnological production of various white biotechnology products (biofuels and chemicals) and their possible applications. Composition and enzymatic degradation of lignocellulose. Pretreatment processes in the field of renewable raw materials. Classification, application and production of enzymes involved in the degradation of lignocellulose. Strategies for the cell design of producer strains for biorefinery products.

Teaching methods

The contents of the lecture will be conveyed in the lecture and through PowerPoint presentations. Students should be encouraged to study the literature and the content of the topics.
