Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to use bioinformatics tools. They have the ability to identify and implement suitable solutions for future scientific questions. They are well versed in the focused search for scientific literature on a specific subject area. Furthermore, they are familiar with the most important online resources and databases in the field of life sciences.

Subject of course

Tutorials and demonstrations will provide the basic framework for independent research into biological data sets (e.g. nucleic acid or protein sequences) and bioinformatics tools. Students are also empowered to solve these problems by independently completing tutorials, searches on the web and the targeted study of software documentation.

Basic skills are developed for the application of essential bioinformatic environments such as the Unix/Linux systems or the statistical environment/programming language R.

Furthermore, the course offers the opportunity to explore in depth the resources, tools and interfaces offered by online platforms and databases.

Teaching methods

Introduction into exercises, independent training of bioinformatic skills, preparation of presentation of results, presentation of results including discussion and Feedback

Previous knowledge

Basic skills in using computers.

Basic skills with operating systems (terminal) and programming languages is advantageous  but not a prerequisite for participation.

The completion of the courses VO Applied Bioinformatics (166.229) and VO Genetic Engineering and Industrial Genomics (166.156) is recommended as prior knowledge.

The exercises require a computer running on Windows, MacOS or Linux and access to the Internet. It is advantageous to take this computer with you to the launch and tutorial sessions, that will make the subsequent completion of exercises much easier.
