After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the basics of biotechnology and chemical engineering/bioprocess technology, including:
- Microorganisms: bacteria, yeasts, fungi - origin/isolation/risk groups, growth (kinetics, nutrients, metabolism), strain improvement (mutation, DNA recombination), secondary metabolites, plant biotechnology, products in industrial biotechnology
- Bioprocess engineering: nutrient medium, sterilization, bioreactor forms, process control, media, monitoring and control
- Biotechnology of mammalian cells
- Downstream processing: Zell-Lye, Separation, Chromatography
Definition, history and economic data, biological material - microorganisms, process engineering, environmental biotechnology and recombinant biotechnology, biotechnology of animal cells, downstream processing
The written exam is made of 18 questions - 1 point per question - and has to be completed in 120 min.
The grading scheme is as follows:
≥ 16 points = “Sehr Gut”, ≥ 13,5 points = “Gut”, ≥ 10,5 points = “Befriedigend”, ≥ 7,5 points = “Genügend” and less than 7,5 points = “Nicht Genügend” and the exam has to be repeated.
