Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to determine characteristic values with the help of laboratory equipment, which are required for the design of large-scale industrial plants, doing so the practical implementation of theoretical facts of process engineering can be demonstrated.

Subject of course

Practical applications of procedural operations are discussed on the basis of selected apparatuses: crushing and particle size analysis, mixing and stirring, bioreactor, filtration, absorption, membrane technology, rectification, adsorption, reaction techniques I and II

Teaching methods

Basic procedural operations are carried out on laboratory equipment in small groups.

1.) PRACTICE REGISTRATION VIA TISS REQUIRED!

2.) MANDATORY PARTICIPATION IN THE INTRODUCTORY TEST! (04.03.2020, 16:00-18:00, practical course lecture hall) if the LVA 165.008 "Physical Chemistry LU" has not yet been completed positively.

3.) REGISTRATION FOR THE ENTRANCE TEST! If you want to take the entrance test, registration for the entrance test is mandatory! (Registration in TISS under Exams)

4.) MANDATORY PARTICIPATION IN THE ASSIGNMENT OF THE LABORATORY TRAINING SPOTS! The laboratory training places will be assigned on 05.03.2020 at 07:00h, office Mauschitz (BIO5B19), during a personal meeting of the applicant. The certificate of the LVA 165.008 "Physikalische Chemie LU" must be presented. The positive completion of the VT basic lectures (159.478, 159.731, 159.786) and the VO 104.084 "Mathematics for TCH 1" by the applicant will be considered accordingly. The certificates mentioned above must be submitted as proof.

5.) MANDATORY PARTICIPATION IN THE INTRODUCTION TO THE SAFETY REGULATIONS! At the beginning of the LVA an introduction to the safety regulations of the institute is given; 1st appointment: 05.03.2020, 14:00-15:00 (BI 4th floor) or 2nd appointment: 06.03.2020, 08:30-09:30 (BI 4th floor).

6.) START OF THE LABORATORY EXERCISES: 09.03.2020

Information about the entrance test: You have to register for the entrance test at TISS! A multiple choice test will be carried out. The multiple choice test will include three calculation examples. The test material which will be asked for in the course of the practical training introduction test for the laboratory exercises 166.209 includes the following topics: 1. ideal gases and gas mixtures (Dalton, Raoult, conversions: vol.%, m.-%, mol-%...), 2. real gases (van der Waals, critical state variables), 3. liquids, solutions and mixtures (Clausius and Clapeyron, equation of August, Raoult, Nernst distribution theorem, Henry, activity and activity coefficient), 4. gas equilibria (mass distribution law according to Guldberg and Balance, concentration data, partial pressures, Le Chatelier and Braun, van t Hoff equations), 5. Electrolyte equilibria (osmotic pressure, pH-value, degree of hydrolysis, activity), 6th law of thermodynamics (enthalpy of reaction, isobaric, isothermal, adiabatic volume change, isochoric processes, Dulong and Petit, Hess' theorem,  Kirchhoff's theorem), 7. Second law of thermodynamics (reaction entropy, Gibbs free enthalpy), 8. reaction kinetics (first and second order reactions, Arrhenius' equation).

The results of the entrance test (04.03.2020, 16:00-18:00, Practical HS) will be announced to the participants by email from the TISS system! Evaluation: E with success; O without success. If the introductory test was evaluated with O, an application for a laboratory training slot at DON 05.03.2020 at 07:00h is not possible!

Information about the exercise: The duration of the practicum is limited to one semester. If the practicum is not completed in one semester (by 31 January or 30 June of the same year), the student must repeat the entire practicum. Exercises The 10 or 14 individual exercises are carried out in groups of three students each. An individual exercise includes: a preliminary discussion with the supervisor (Tuwel-registration), the experimental part of the exercise (Tuwel-registration), the preparation of a protocol (Tuwel-delivery), a final questioning by the supervisor (debriefing, Tuwel-registration). Each calendar week a maximum of two individual exercises per exercise group may be completed. The preliminary discussion and the experimental part of the exercises must be carried out in the same calendar week.

Access to the Tuwel course is granted when the student is admitted to the LVA.

The preliminary discussion for each individual exercise takes place before the practical part of the exercise. All three exercise participants must be present at the preliminary discussion. The registration for the preliminary discussion takes place in the Tuwel. Preliminary discussions can also be held in writing (e.g. multiple choice test).

The chapter "Measurement Techniques" in the laboratory exercise script can be checked at each preliminary discussion.

The practice groups determine their working days themselves by registering for the practical part of the exercise in the Tuwel course. The beginning of the individual exercise can be found in the Tuwel course. At the start of the individual exercise, the participants will arrive at the respective exercise equipment.

For each exercise group and exercise, one protocol with the name of the supervisor, the date of the practical part and the names of the group members has to be submitted to the responsible supervisor by handing it in to the Tuwel course at least two weeks after the practical part, otherwise points will be deducted. 1 point will be deducted for each week of overtime. If the overdrawn week is longer than six weeks, the protocol will be evaluated with 0 points.

At the latest on the second Monday after the practical part of the exercise, the exercise group has to come to the supervisor for a debriefing. The debriefing appointments are always on Monday. The corresponding periods can be found in the Tuwel course. All three exercise participants must be present at the debriefing.

Certificates are issued in the second week after the end of the semester. All students who have not completed the laboratory exercises by the end of the semester will receive a negative certificate and have to complete the laboratory exercises again..

Participation in an excursion is a prerequisite for the certificate issue. At least one excursion takes place every semester. Participation must also be confirmed on the exercise list. Excursions are announced at TUWEL.

The documents required for the laboratory exercise are available in the form of a script at the institute . For the preliminary discussion material please refer to the relevant literature.

For each individual exercise a maximum of 10 points is awarded for the preliminary discussion, 3 points for the experimental part of the exercise and 10 points for the debriefing. The total score for an individual exercise is made up of the number of points for the preliminary discussion, the number of points from the practical part of the exercise and the number of points for the protocol and debriefing. If the preliminary discussion of an individual exercise is assessed negatively (less than 5 points), the experimental part of the individual exercise may still be done. If the preliminary discussion of a further individual exercise is judged negatively (less than 5 points), the experimental part of this individual exercise may still be done. If the preliminary discussion of a third individual exercise is judged negatively (less than 5 points), then this results in a negative evaluation of the course. If a single exercise of an individual exercise is judged with 0 points, this results in a negative evaluation of the LVA. If the student receives a score of only 5 points (or less) on the individual protocol(s) and debriefing(s) during one or more individual exercises, this leads to a deterioration of the grade of the report by at least one grade.

The laboratory exercise is considered to be completed with a negative result: Exceeding the one-semester deadline, if more than two preliminary discussions have been assessed negatively, if an exercise part has been assessed with 0 points, if a protocol and debriefing have been assessed negatively, in case of unexcused absence during an individual exercise..

The laboratory opening hours for the VT basic laboratory exercises (LVA 166.209, 159.808) are without exception 09:00h to 16:00h. The laboratory practice days for the above-mentioned basic laboratory exercises are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday without exception. It is not permitted to carry out the above-mentioned basic laboratory exercises during the holiday period.

The safety regulations of the TU Vienna must be followed!

Examination modalities

According to the laboratory regulations, 10 individual exercises are assessed, each consisting of a preliminary discussion, a practical exercise, the writing of a protocol and a debriefing. Participation in an excursion! The course must be completed by the end of the semester! Depending on the number of laboratory training places offered, VT students are advised to complete the LVA 159.808 in the winter semester, since in the summer semester it may not be possible to offer enough laboratory practice places! Grading scale (non-binding orientation guide): S1: 184 ... 207 points; U2: 157 ... 183 points; B3: 131 ... 156 points; U4: 104 ... 130 points; N5: 0 ... 103 points.
