Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the physical and chemical foundations for life and biological systems, and they are able to critically review, discuss current theories about the origin of life and explain the ecological term spaceship earth and its most relevant cycles of matter. Further, they are able to explain and discuss principles of the evolution theory. After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the morphological structure as well as the essential functions of the cell. Furthermore, students master the basics of formal genetics and can apply them in the context of molecular biology. This also applies in general terms for epigenetic phenomena.

Subject of course

The principal focus of this lecture are basic principles of biology that are necessary for an understanding of modern biotechnology. During the course, the foundations for the origin of life, evolution theory, and a brief introduction to morphology, function of cells in general (cytology) and the ecological term spaceship earth and its most relevant cycles of matter will be explained. Aspects of formal genetics will be discussed in more detail as far as necessary. A brief introduction to epigenetics will be made using illustrative examples.

Teaching methods

Frontal presentation combined with the presentation of case studies

The lecture is carried out in response to the current Covid measures in distance learning. We will hold the lecture in 4 units via a Live stream (TUWEL) at the beginning of the semester. The streams will be made available through TUWEL. TFurther, the presented slides are made available on TUWEL.
