After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the morphological structure as well as the essential functions of the cell. Furthermore, students master the basics of formal and cytogenetics and can apply them in the context of molecular biology. This also applies in general terms for epigenetic phenomena.

The principal focus of this lecture is devoted to morphology and function of cells in general (cytology). Aspects of formal genetics as well as cytogenetics will be discussed in more detail as far as necessary. A brief introduction to epigenetics will be made using illustrative examples.
