Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • understand and apply the basics of process analysis
  • calculate material and energy balances,
  • set up the calculation of #DOF (degrees of freedom) of complex balances, understand the relevance in process simulation e
  • apply energy integration concepts and the optimization of heat exchanger networks (PINCH - Technology)

Subject of course

Basics of process analysis; material and energy balances (principle of conservation) for the unit operation level and process level; definitions of important terms; schematic diagrams in chemical engineering. Balances for steady state systems with and without reaction; implementation of recycle and bypass; balances for transient systems; energy integration, optimization of heat exchanger networks (PINCH - Technology), basic discussion of Linnhoff metjhod, enthalpy flow/temperature diagrams.
