After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
- to outline the importance of microbiology for biotechnology, medicine and the environment.
- to describe the essential groups of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa) and viruses.
- to describe the microbial diversity of metabolic pathways and degradation processes.
The lecture contains:
- introduction to the field of microbiology;
- importance of microorganisms in biotechnology and significance for humans, animals and plants;
- discussion of cell structures, difference between eu- and prokaryotic microorganisms, as well as viruses;
- basic classification and diversity of microorganisms
- microorganisms in the environment and significance for the global nutrient cycles (e.g. carbon, nitrogen, sulphur)
The lecture will be held in presence mode. The lecture material (ppt slides) will be made available on TUWEL. If the situation in winter makes it necessary, we will switch to distance learning in the short term.
