After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
- to outline the importance of microbiology for biotechnology, medicine and the environment.- to describe the essential groups of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa) and viruses.- to describe the microbial diversity of metabolic pathways and degradation processes.
The lecture contains:- introduction to the field of microbiology;- importance of microorganisms in biotechnology and significance for humans, animals and plants; - discussion of cell structures, difference between eu- and prokaryotic microorganisms, as well as viruses;- basic classification and diversity of microorganisms- microorganisms in the environment and significance for the global nutrient cycles (e.g. carbon, nitrogen, sulphur)

IMPORTANT: In WS 2021/2022 the lecture will be held using Distance Learning. Slides with sound will be provided at TUWEL on the given dates. In addition, there will be the possibility of an online question and answer session via teleconference at the end of the respective units of the lecturers (ZOOM). The dates for the respective question hours can be found in the course in TUWEL.
All exams are currently held in online mode via TUWEL. In order to take exams, you must be registered for the Microbiology course (TISS / TUWEL). You can then log in via TUWEL. Under the exam date you will then find the assignment to the respective exam group. Please dial in 15-20 min before the start of the exam. In TUWEL you will also find a guide for taking the exams and the requirements for taking the exams online.
As far as the requirements allow it, examination dates are also planned in presence. Please inform yourself whether your selected date takes place in presence or online. The examination locations depend on the available premises and may vary.
