After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
- to define the essential processes of life and to distinguish them from the abiotic world
- to formulate the storage and flow of information in biological systems and to describe it on a molecular biological level
- to discuss the importance of the life sciences for the field of biotechnology and related disciplines within the era of technology and natural sciences.
The teaching content consists of the following parts:
What is life? Evolution: origin of living diversity; Chemical foundations of life and biomolecules; Formal genetics and laws of inheritance; Genetic information; Mutation - change in the genetic program; Reproduction: propagation and transmission of a life program;
Viruses, plasmids and mobile genetic elements; Cytology; Bacteria as simple cells and experimental objects;
Importance and principles of biotechnology and genetic engineering;
Assessment of adverse effects of chemical substances and processes on humans, animals and ecosystems
LectureDiscussion and presentation of examples
The lecture is held as a distance learning course. For this purpose, from mid-October (week of 19.10.) to the end of December (week of 14.12.), the documents of the corresponding lecture unit are uploaded weekly to TUWEL.
PowerPoint slides with sound are made available. Each of the five lecturers offers an additional question and answer session via TUWEL (ZOOM), where (comprehension) questions can be asked. This is intended to support you with learning the different topics.
All exams are currently held in online mode via TUWEL. In order to take exams, you must be registered for the Biology course (TISS / TUWEL). You can then log in via TUWEL. Under the exam date you will then find the assignment to the respective exam group. Please dial in 15-20 min before the start of the exam. In TUWEL you will also find a guide for taking the exams and the requirements for taking the exams online.
Written exam at the end of the term or during the following term. Duration of the exam: 120 minutes
Slides of this course are available (download in TISS).
