Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify opportunities and boundaries of process simulation and to select suitable software tools. Furthermore, students know the necessary steps and parameters to successfully set up a simulation model.

Subject of course

Terms and definitions (model, simulation, etc.); classification of process simulation tools; application and boundaries of process simulation; criteria so select appropriate tools; setting up and parametrization of simulation models (physical and thermodynamic properties, equilibrium/kinetics); running a simulation and influence of system architecture (equation oriented, modular-sequencial, convergence); introduction and demonstration of simulation (flowsheeting) tools, examples based on recent simulation work.

Teaching methods

Presentation of basic terms, enhancement of knowledge and discussion based on examples, introduction and demonstration of software tools.

Basic knowledge in chemical engineering (balancing, flowsheets) - especially thermal process engineering (evaporation, distillation, heat exchange) and chemical process engineering (reactors, reaction chemistry)
Basic knowledge in thermodynamics/physical chemistry (equation of state, activity coefficients, mixed phase thermodynamics, vapor-liquid equilibrium)
