Aim of course

Theoretical and experimental strategies for the investigation of states of matter and of state changes handouts available via TUWEL.

Subject of course

1. Fundamentals of thermodynamics: Thermodynamic equilibrium in simple systems (1 component, 1 phase): reversible/irreversible processes, cyclic processes, ideal/non-ideal systems, fundamental laws of thermodynamics and related state functions. 2. Thermodynamics of systems with more than one component and more than one phase: thermodynamic equations of state, phase diagrams, ideal/real liquid and solid mixtures, miscibility gaps 3. Chemical kinetics: time scales and rate equations of chemical reactions, reaction mechanisms, rate determining parameters, reaction dynamics. 4. Statistical thermodynamics: Boltzmann-, Fermi-Dirac-, and Bose-Einstein statistics, determination of thermodynamic state functions via quantum-chemical calculations.
