Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe symmetries, electronic structures and energy bands in solids, to calculate density of states, to explain optical properties and spectroscopy, to summarise electrical and mechanical properties as well as to operate simple quantum mechanical calculations in solids.

Subject of course

Symmetry and electronic structure of solids (reciprocal lattice, Bloch theorem). Energy bands (free electron gas, real metals, semiconductors, insulators) Density of states. Optical properties and spectroscopy (UPS,XPS,XAS,XES,EELS,Mössbauer) of solids. Electrical properties (insulators, semiconductors, conductors, superconductors, ionic conductors) Collective magnetism Mechanical properties. Simple quantum mechanical calculations in solids

Teaching methods

  • Lecture about foundations of solid state theory
  • Introduction into WIEN2k
  • Operate exercises on a PC
