Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

explain and apply the basic principles of kinetic processes in inorganic solids. This enables participants to understand and evaluate solid state electrochemical experiments and to apply the gained knowledge to selection and optimization of materials for electrochemical cells (batteries, fuel cells, electrolysis cells) as well as materials for data storage, actors and sensors.

Subject of course

The physico-chemical and electrochemical principles are presented which determine the application-relevant properties of ceramics, inlcuding their preparation and stability. Topics are i) kinetic processes such as diffusion, charge transport, interaction with gas phase, phase formation and the respective relevance for solid state reactions as well as applications such as batteries, fuel cells, electrolysis cells, and electroceramics, ii) lattice defects in dependence of material and experimental parameters as well as their role at interfaces.
