Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify proteomic questions in basic and applied research and quality control. The learning goal is to know different proteomic strategies and choose the appropriate strategy for diverse questions. Students will be able to design different proteomic experiments and theoretically apply sample preparation, proteomic analyses and bioinformatic analyses. This includes knowledge of protein and peptide separation techniques, such as electrophoresis and liquid chromatography (LC), (tandem) mass spectrometry (MS/MS), ion mobility (IMS) and LC-(IMS)-MS/MS of for identification, characterisation and quantification of proteins and peptides, and functional annotation of proteins and their modifications. Moreover, students will learn to apply statistical tools to proteomic data to calculate protein identification confidence and significant quantitative changes.

Subject of course

Proteomic strategies and methods: definition of research question, different sample preparation methods, identification, quantitation and annotation of proteins, peptides and proteomes, structural characterisation of proteins and their modifications, functional proteomics, high-through-put technologies, (tandem) mass spectrometry, ion mobility, liquid chromatography, bioinformatic tools
