Aim of course

The theory behind powder diffraction. Independent execution of experiments. Interpretation of the results.

Subject of course

Theory: Symmetry of crystals, lattices, unit cell, lattice planes, Miller indices, diffraction on powders, diffraction cones, Bragg's equation.

Instrumentation: Bragg-Brentano-Geometry, X-ray tubes, divergence slit, filter/monochromator, detectors.

Sample preparation.

Measurement.

Interpretation: Indexation, determination of cell metrics, phase identification, database search, profile fit, Rietveld refinement, crystallite size.
