Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • ... differentiate different (electro-)chemical driving forces for the formation of charged interfaces and describe the thermodynamics of these processes.
  • ... explain the structure of the electrochemical double layer by means of different physical modells, and to explain the difference between electrostatic and chemical capacitance.
  • ... explain the formation of mixed potentials.
  • ... describe the electrochemical processes behind corrosion phenomena and to analyse them by basic thermodynamic and kinetic models (Pourbaix and Evans diagrams).
  • ... explain the basics of electrochemical metal layer deposition.
  • ... describe the electrochemical basics of selected large scale industrial processes (e.g. chlor-alkali electrolysis, aluminium smelting, or others).

Subject of course

Thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical processes including reaction mechanisms

Application of electrochemcial technologies for electroplating, refining, production, electrolysis, sensors and galvanic cells, cathodic and anodic processes, electrocatalysis, corrosion

Teaching methods

Lecture given in German, with the main contents written on the blackboard including a number of examples. Interaction with the students (questions, discussions, etc.) is highly welcome!
