Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the role of process analytics in the chemical industry. They are aware of the relevance of chemical information in the development of new processes and in the optimization of existing (bio) chemical production processes. They have a solid knowledge of various analytical techniques and their implementation in the field of on-line, at-line and in-line analytics.


Subject of course

Process Analytical Chemistry as integral part in the development, optimization and monitoring of production processes in the chemical industry (process analytical technology, PAT; quality by design, QbD). Strategies for sampling of homogeneous and heterogeneous process streams, including sample transport and sample preparation. From off-line to at-line, on-line as well as in-line measurement concepts. New developments in process chromatography (LC, GC) optical spectroscopy (UV-Vis, Raman, MIR, NIR) with focus on new light sources (lasers) as well as mass spectrometry are introduced on a measurement system level and exemplified through application examples.  Chemometric data analysis strategies for for qualitative and quantitative analysis of one and multi-dimensional data-sets. Optical imaging and time resolved spectroscopy.
