Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the theoretical background of modern chromatographic and hyphenated techniques. They are knowledgable about the hardware configuration of these techniques, typical applications, analytical figures of merits and possible limitations of their use.

  • related to separation techniques, modern formats and materials of HPLC stationary phases are discussed, and further more supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), countercurrent chromatography (CCC), electrophoretic separation techniques and field-flow fractionation (FFF).
  • with respect to hyphenated techniques, GC/MS, GC/FTIR (GC with Fourier-transform infrared detection), GC/AED (= gas chromatography with atomic emission detection), LC/MS, LC/FTIR, LC/NMR , CE/MS, TLC/MS, two-dimensional chromatography in the 'heart cut' mode and in the comprehensive mode (GCxGC and LCxLC) are dealt with.

Subject of course

Theoretical background and practical realisation of advanced (chromatographic and non-chromatographic) separation techniques:

  • Modern separation techniques and formats for HPLC; supecritical fluid chromatography (SFC), countercurrent chromatography (CCC), electrophoretic separation techniques, field flow fractionation (FFF).

and the following hyphenated techniques:

  • GC/MS, GC/FTIR, GC/AED, LC/MS, LC/IR, LC/NMR, CE/MS, TLC/MS). Two-dimensional chromatography (heart cut and comprehensive GCxGC and LCxLC).

Teaching methods
