2024W, VO, 1.5h, 2.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Online

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the most important ionization techniques (EI, CI, ESI, MALDI, APCI, APPI) and mass analyzers (quadrupole, triple quadrupole, ion trap, time-of-flight analyzer, ion cyclotron, ion mobility) and name typical areas of application. This includes knowledge of MS / MS methods, the combination of ionization methods with suitable mass analyzers, knowledge about hybrid instruments and potential hyphenation with different separation methods (LC, GC). The students will also be able to interpret mass spectra, with a focus on fragmentation of molecules.

Subject of course

Building on the knowledge from the basic courses, the following content is taught:

  • Principles and Mechanisms of hard and soft ionization techniques
  • Principles and capabilities of mass analyzers (low / high resolution mass analyzers)
  • Tandem and multistage mass spectrometer
  • Application of the methods to questions in the field of organic mass spectrometry (for example, polymers, natural products, medicines, etc.)

Teaching methods

  • self study
  • presentation of topics and discussion or topics
  • Slides suitable to achieve the learning objective
  • Lecture slides with voice over if necessary
  • Question and answer hours
  • exemplary videos
  • Learning of spectra interpretation using real examples
