Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the sample preparation of biological material, to contrast protein, carbohydrate and lipid analysis as well as to summarise analysis of important PTMs. Likewise, students will deal with DNA and RNA analysis, bionanoparticles and imaging techniques.

  • Sample preparation of biological material (cell disintegration, isolation and purification of biopolymers, labeling and derivatization methods)
  • protein analysis (amino acid analysis, protein determination methods, protein sequencing)
  • carbohydrate analysis (mono-, oligo- and polysaccharides)
  • lipid analysis (extraction, separation, ...)
  • analysis of important PTMs (phosphorylation, glycosylation, acylation, acetylation, ...)
  • analysis of DNA and RNA
  • analysis of bionanoparticles 
  • Imaging techniques

Each student will obtain a scientific publication via TUWEL and should prepare a short presentation (approx. 5 min) as basis for the discussion of the paper in respect to the topics covered in the lecture.
