Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.3
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to name analytical methods of glycoprotein and lipid analysis and to understand its application and use in basic research and in an industrial context (eg pharmaceutical industry). Likewise, they are able to name modern concepts of metabolomics.

Subject of course

  • Discussion of concepts and strategies in the field of glycomics, lipidomics and metabolomics.
  • Glycomics: analysis of intact glycoporoteins, release and isolation of glycan pool, analysis of free carbohydrates (derivatization, separation, etc.), determination of individual glycan structures, discussion of special glycans
  • Lipidomics: isolation of lipids from biological material, analysis of lipids (separation, immunoassays, ... ), structure elucidation, discussion of special lipid classes
  • Metabolomics: Definitions, classification of metabolomic strategies (metabolite-target analysis, metabolite profiling, metabolite fingerprinting, metabonomics) flux analysis

Discussion of applied technologies. Importance of these methods for biotechnological processes and drug development. Discussion of concepts and tools in bioinformatics relevant for these topics.
