Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the basic concepts and applications of the following themes:

  • High resolution imaging techniques (physical concepts, instrumentation, analytical characteristics and applications): REM/Electron beam microprobe and scanning probe microscopy

  • Mass spectrometry (basic concepts and vacuum generation, instrumental set-ups, gas phase ionisation and solid/liquid phase desorption/ionisation of organic and inorganic compounds, type of analyzer, multistage analyzer, detectors, terminology in MS (resolution, TIC etc.), information content (molecular ions, isotope pattern, fragment ion etc.), Fragmentation mechanisms and basic rules of electron impact fragmentation of molecules for structure elucidation; standard on-line coupling techniques (GC/MS and LC/MS).

  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (basic concepts: theoretical background, deduction of resonance condition, discussion of various NMR-active isotopes and their sensitivity etc., instrumentation (FT/CW techniques), sample preparation and interference signals, shielding/de-shielding, chemical shift, J-coupling, dynamic effects, spin systems, simple puls techniques, introduction into interpretation of NMR spectra for structure elucidation).

Additional information

Examination modalities

A written examination in German on the lecture contents. The exam lasts 120 minutes and consists of 10 tasks. These tasks are composed as follows:
- 7 questions about high-resolution imaging techniques (6x 1 point, 1x 6 points)
- 17 questions mass spectrometry (10x 1 points, 2x 4 points, 2x 3 points, 3x 2 points)
- 3 Questions about nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (3x 6 points)

A total of 60 points are awarded for the examination; more than 53 points correspond to a "Sehr Gut", more than 45 points to a "Gut", more than 38 points to a "Befriedigend", more than 30 points to a "Genügend" and less than 30 points to a “Nicht Genügend", which means that the examination must be repeated.

Since 25 January 2019, examinations for "ACIII new" with the course contents from WS2018/19 onwards have been held.
Examinations for the material semesters up to WS 2017/18 will only be held once per semester on the same dates since SS 2020; registration is under Analytical Chemistry III ALT. Important, as there are different questions.

The exams are held on Fridays (see general announcement) from 14:00 to 16:00 in the Radinger Lecture Hall (or an alternate lecture hall as announced).

=== Exams in Distance Learning: detailled info will be sent out by mail before the exam

Online exams via iXam system and Safe Exam Browser, Zoom for communication (video + voice)

Exam questions were adapted for the new format and splittet for better grading. Points per questions range from 1 to 6, depending on the extent of the question.

• 7 questions about high-resolution imaging techniques
• 17 questions mass spectrometry
• 3 Questions about nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

in total - 60 points

exams: Friday, 15:00 to 17:00
