Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain principles and mechanisms of the gaseous phase ionization techniques and desorption/ionization techniques, to identify principles and efficiencies of "high end" mass-spectrometric analyser, to categorise different mass-spectrometers as well as to name typical application examples in the field of biomedical engineering.

Subject of course

  • Principles and mechanisms of the gaseous phase ionization techniques and desorption/ionization techniques (desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI), vacuum matrix Assisted LDI (vMALDI, ESI and nano ESI)
  • principles and efficiencies of "high end" mass-spectrometric analyzers: Linear and reflectron time-of-flight analyser, quadrupoles, 2D and 3D ion traps inclusive orbitrap
  • Tandem and multi-stage mass spectrometer for collision-induced dissociation
  • Imaging and profiling mass spectrometry
  • Application of the methods on qualitative (structure-referred) and quantitative questions from the medicine and medical pharmacology/toxicology.

Teaching methods

  • concept: inverted classroom - self study, meetings for assessment to monitor progress of study
  • practice section on mass spectrometers (at the end of the lectures)
  • slides and videos suitable to achieve the learning objective
