Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to assess the potential applications of biosensors and optical techniques with a focus on NIR, MIR and Raman spectroscopic methods for bioprocess analysis.

Subject of course

This course will provide an overview on concepts and working principles of biosensors and optical techniques capable for in- and on-line measurements. Strategies for selective recognition using bio-molecules (enzymesensors, immunosensors, microbial sensors) will be presented. The different types of transducers including calorimetric, optical, electrochemical as well as gravimetric will be explained on selected examples. Single element sensors as well as sensor arrays will be introduced. Using examples form successful biosensors their strengths and weaknesses in terms of analytical figures of merit (sensitivity, robustness, on-line capability, calibration) as well as cost (stand alone sensors vs. use in FIA Systems, disposable sensors) will be discussed. In addition fiber optic sensors (NIR/MIR/Raman) capable for on- and in-line bioprocess monitoring shall be introduced. Emphasis will be put on the accessible information content as well as on modern strategies to extract relevant information form the recorded spectra
