After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the interrelation between materials and function in different electrochemical devices. They can explain relevant systems for energy conversion and storage, sensors, information storage, etc. and assess their relevance regarding global market, figures of merit and safety aspects. Additionally, students are able to discuss recent research focus and research aims for these technologies.
Practical competences: The students are able to develop strategies for optimization of materials and devices based on the properites (electronic, ionic, optical, etc.) of electrochemical and electroceramic materials.
The connection between properties and application of solid state electrochemical and electrocermaic materials ins presented using examples of important current and future technologies (li-ion batteries, sensors, fuel cells, electrolysis cells, solar/photoelectrochemical cells, information storage devices, PTC resistors, varistors, actuators, or similar). Emphasis is laid on techniques for optimization of materials and devices (doping, grain/grain boundaries, thin films, space charges, ...). Stability limits and mechnaisms for degradation and loss of function of materials and devices are presented and the underlying principles and causes for these effects (voltages, currents, temperature, ...) under operation conditions are discussed.
lecture using slides and blackboard (if necessary, as reverse-classroom lecture via TUWEL)
The lecture "164.176 Technology of Functional Materials" is in the course of being renamed into "164.365 Electrochemical Materials and Devices" or "164.365 Anwendungen elektrochemischer Materialien (VO 2,0)". It was last given in 2022 under both names/numbers, exams are 1:1 transferable (but creditable only once). Please find the TUWEL online-course under the new course name.
From 2023 on, this lecture is not offered under this name anymore, exams under this name are still offered until end of June 2023, later please use 164.365 instead.
written exam (online only if necessary dur to restrictions)
