After successful completion of the course, students are able to unserstand the material behaviour and properties based on the structure on different scales, and they know the respective testing and investigation methods.
Material Selection: Property and requirement profiles, economical aspects Electronic structure of solids (reciprocal lattice, ); Energy bands (free electron gas, real metals, semiconductors, insulators, ferromagnets), Density of states Structure of materials: bonding, ideal and real structures, lattice efects, .. Relationships structure-properties Mechanical behaviour: elastic and anelastic effects; strength, plasticity/ductility; dynamic and cyclic properties; fatigue endurance strength, fundamentals of fracture mechanics, fracture toughness, threshold, da/dN curves, testing procedures, structural reliability, statistical evaluation. Modification of mechanical properties, role of defects, strengthening mechanisms, practical relevance and application (fundamentals of material treatment, hardening, thermomechanical treatment) Thermal properties: thermal conductivity and diffusivity, thermal expansion Thermoelectric effects Electrical conductivity; relevant parameters; conductors, insulators, semiconductors; superconductors Magnetism, magnetic properties, soft and hard magnets, frequency effects, anisotropy Optical behaviour: reflexivity; transmission; refraction; luminescence Attention: the lecture is held in German language!
Presentation of the contents by ppt, the files being available to the students in TISS. Free questioning by the students as wel as questions to the auditorium by the lecturers. Presentation of representative samples
