After successful completion of the course, students are able to comply with basic rules of conduct in chemical laboratories and perform easy manipulations. Therefore, students have reassured themselves having chosen the appropriate study.
To give a rough overview of the band-width of the bachelor study "Technische Chemie" the students will attend 1 full day (8 hours per day) lab exercises in hands-on experimental work under intense supervision of tutors and assistants. The exercises comprise of 2 of the 4 experiments in synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry. Optionally, the other 2 experiments are offered within the LU Orientation course for beginners in Technical Chemistry II (LVA-Nr. 163.172). Furthermore, there will be offered an informative lecture covering the job description of a trained chemist.
Practical exercises in the chemistry laboratory, simple calculations.
ATTENTION: This course starts on 1.10. at 10 am in the Radinger lecture theater, Getreidemarkt 9 (sine tempore). Signpostings will guide you to the lecture theater.
The participation at the practical exercises on 2. and 3.October 2019 is only allowed for the participants of the E-ChemTest! Students already registered (continuing their study started earlier) without attending this pre-study phase need to attend their first E-ChemTest on 1.10.2019 in the afternoon (details will be announced at the informative part of the course in the Radinger lecture theater starting at 1.10.2019 at 10 am). IN THIS CASE no separate registration for the E-Chemtest is required.
The 4 topics of the lab course of the will cover the following exercises: 1) synthetic chemistry (synthesis of an azo-dye, performance of a polyamide condensation, esterification) 2) analytical chemistry (characterisation of wine: titration of the total acid content, photometric measurement of the tartaric acid content, thin-layer-chromatography of wine dyes, atomic absorption spectroscopy of the copper content of wine) 3) physical chemistry (determination of the osmotic pressure of sacharose solutions) 4) biochemistry (DNA isolation from E. coli cells and an introduction into methods of bioengineering)
Confirmation of participation in the course examination comprises of personal participation at the E-ChemTest before the orientation course, active class participation and hands-on experimental work on 2. October 2019 as well as attendance at the lectures given on 1. and 4. October 2019. The certificate will be issued only after participation at a second run of the E-ChemTest at the end of the following summer term.

The practical exercises take place on 2.10. between 09:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 18:00. The optional extension LU Orientation course for beginners in Technical Chemistry II (LVA-Nr. 163.172) take place on 3.10. 2019. All practical exercises take place in the following students labs: Synthetic chemistry: students lab BK U1, Physical chemistry: students lab BC O4 H31, Analytical chemistry: students lab BB 05 C01 and C17, Biochemistry: students lab BC O4 H01/H11. For the practical exercises at 2. (and for the optional extension on 3. October 2019) in the labs bring the following items: 1) a white lab coat (compulsary) 2) paper tissue, dish washing detergent, waterresistant ink writer, lighter (recommended), ruler; latex gloves
For the exercise in physical chemistry you will need a pocket calculator!
