Ability to synthesize and characterize organic, inorganic and organometallic compounds according to given experimental instructions.
Syntheses and characterisations of organic and inorganic compounds by different mechanisms and diverse techniques. Experimental tasks are organized in thematic groups which contain methodologically similar examples; out of these the lab course of each student is compiled. This program comprises the syntheses of organic compounds by nucleophilic or radical substitution, addition or elimination, oxidation or reduction, substitution of aromatic compounds, condensation, diazotation as well as carbonyl- or carboxyl-derivative. One of these syntheses has to be done on small scale. In the inorganic part selected compound classes in inorganic and metalorganic chemistry are synthesized: simple metal complexes, molecular organic compounds of the main group elements, application of Li- and Mg-organyls in inorganic chemistry, metal organic compounds containing transition metals (metal carbonyls, sandwich complexes etc.). Further a natural product is isolated and a reaction with an organometallic compound is performed. Characterisation of all products is accomplished by appropriate spectroscopic methods and/or chromatography. Further important points are consciousness of environmental aspects and disposal of by-products. There is a discussion held prior to each synthesis. ECTS-credits are allocated to the particular topics as follows: Inorganic Chemistry 5.5 credits, Organic Chemistry 9.5 credits.
