Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the atomic structure and, therefore, understand the reactivity of the different chemical elements. Based on group theory students are able to understand sophisticated problems of coordination chemistry and explain the strngths and weaknesses of different theories. Students are able to explain the special optical and magnetic properties of the lanthanides and actinides, give an overview of the concepts of metal-organic chemistry and describe inorganic rings, cages and clusters.

Subject of course

Structure of the atoms - repetition and advanced description (the hydrogen atom: exact description of the orbitals; extrapolation for all other elements of the periodic table; the Term scheme) (Molecular-)Symmetry and group theory (Symmetry elements and symmetry operations; point groups; irreducible representations and character tables; Application of point group symmetry for optical activity, vibrational spectroscopy, cristallography) Chemistry of main group-elements (low valent compounds (silylene, nitrene, etc.) and their oligomeric and polymeric forms; double bonds of heavier main group elements, low valent main group compounds of transition metals: carbene- and nitrene-complexes) Chemistry of transition metal elements ¿ coordination chemistry (valence band theory, ligand field theory, MO-theory; electronic spectra of complexes (UV-VIS-NIR); magnetic properties of complexes; structurs, isomeres; differences between the properties of 3d and 4d/5d-metals) Lanthanides, Actinides and Trans-Actinides (f-orbitals; coordination compounds of the f-elements; Trans-Actinides - Translawrencium-elements 6d) Metalorganic compounds (18-electron-rule; isolobal relation of main group and fragments of transition metal complexes) Inorganic chains, rings, cages and cluster (compounds with element-element-bonds: metallic main group cluster; phosphorus rich hydrogen-phosphorus-compounds;
Zintl-phases; Chevrel-phases; metal cluster; complexes with metal-metal-bonds; compounds with multi-center-bonds: (Hetero-)Boranes and related compounds; electron deficiency-cluster)

Teaching methods

The lecture is divided in 7 chapters. Before and right after each chapter a 5 minutes anonymous written test with 3 questions covering the relevant chapter is given, but due to anonymity not individually marked. It yields a representative average of the pre-knowledge of the whole cohort of students before starting a chapter and makes the closing of the knowledge gap after the chapter visible. Furthermore, the students get a rapid feedback about their learning success.

Mode of examination

Oral
