2016W, LU, 1.5h, 1.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: LU Laboratory Exercise

Aim of course

Due to a limited number of laboratory work space we offer a two-step procedure to get a priority ranking for a lab work space in the compulsary lab course "Grundlagen der Chemie".

The first step is a web-based test in General Chemistry (E-ChemTest). This test consists of 30 arbitrary chosen questions allowing 60 minutes for answering. The participation at this test will be supervised at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry (E163). There are several time slots in August and September available, registration is required.

Details for the registration and further information about the E-ChemTest can be found at the homepage of the office of the dean of technical chemistry (german language):

http://www.tuwien.ac.at/dekanate/chemie/echemtest/

Participation at this E-ChemTest is a prerequisite for a lab work place for the practical exercises of the orientation course (LVA-Nr. 163.136), but the result is used anonymous for statistical purposes only.

We consider this procedure as part of the quality management in the beginning phase of study  to support the student's self-orientation. Therefore on 3.October 2016 a short preview of the compulsary subjects of the first term will be given by the respective lecturers, despite of an introductory overview of the faculty of "Technische Chemie" given by the dean of faculty and a presentation of the bacchelor study "Technische Chemie" given by the dean for study affairs. This should reconfirm the student's decision to begin a bacchelor study in "Technische Chemie" and avoid drop-outs during the first term and correct eventually existing wrong expectations. Furthermore a short information block for disabled students will be given by Mag. Fuhrmann-Ehn (disabled student¿s office).

The practical exercises will take place on 4. and 5.October 2016.

Finally, there will be a presentation about the job description of nowadays chemists given by Prof. Rupprechter on 6th October 2016 at 16h in the Radinger lecture theater.

The certificate will be issued only after participation in a second run of the E-ChemTest at the end of the summer term 2017 (last week in June 2017, details will be announced).

Subject of course

To give a rough overview of the band-width of the bacchelor study "Technische Chemie" the students will attend 2 full days (8 hours per day) lab exercises in hands-on experimental work under intense supervision of tutors and assistents. The exercises comprise of experiments in synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry. Furthermore, there will be offered an informative lecture covering the job description of a trained chemist.

Additional information

Attention: This course starts on 3.10. at 10 am in the Radinger lecture theater, Getreidemarkt 9 (sine tempore). Signpostings will guide you to the lecture theater.

The participation at the practical exercises on 4. and 5.October 2016 is only allowed for the participants of the E-ChemTest!

The 4 topics of the lab course of the will cover the following exercises: 1) synthetic chemistry (synthesis of an azo-dye, performance of a polyamide condensation, esterification) 2) analytical chemistry (characterisation of wine: titration of the total acid content, photometric measurement of the tartaric acid content, thin-layer-chromatography of wine dyes, atomic absorption spectroscopy of the copper content of wine) 3) physical chemistry (determination of the osmotic pressure of sacharose solutions) 4) biochemistry (DNA isolation from E. coli cells and an introduction into methods of bioengineering)
