Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Online

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • describe certain concepts (reaction types) of organic chemistry;
  • understand and use the basics of the "language" (nomenclature) of organic chemistry;
  • meaningfully write down mechanisms of reactions and is able to read them;
  • predict processes under certain reaction conditions.

Subject of course

Basic knowledge in organic chemistry: Electronic configuration - orbitals - hybridisation - s- and p-Bonds - influence of electronic effects on bond polarity - reactive intermediates - acids and bases, electrophiles and nucleophiles - functional groups and carbon backbone - principles of nomenclature. Correlations between structure, physical properties and chemical reactivity of the most important classes of organic compounds. Important reaction types and basic reaction mechanisms occuring in organic chemistry.

Teaching methods

The lecture presents the concepts in talks and gives ample space for questions. Additionally, application examples of important organic molecules or researchers are given to loosen up the lecture.

Mode of examination

Written
