Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe an important set of industrially applied chemical conversions, to explain the underlying (chemical) mechanisms, to elucidate the according engineering processes and to justify their selection.

Subject of course

In the chapter chemical engineering the characteristics of the different reactor types are discussed. Special attention is given to the selection of the optimum reactor type. The scale-up from the laboratory-scale to industrial-scale units in practice is presented, the various risks are analysed and the methods to reduce the risks shown. The part industrial organic chemistry concerns industrial production of large scale organic chemicals and polymers, for example oxidation products of ethylene and propylene, styrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene. The chapter Inorganic Technology deals with industrial processes needing high-pressure, high-temperature or working under high purity conditions. Selected examples are the different modifications of carbon and boron nitride as well as the semiconductor materials Si, Ge, GaAs.

Teaching methods

After introduction into process engineering based on fundamental knowledge, selected industrial processes from inorganic and organic technology will be presented and their underlying chemical mechanisms will be explained.
